At the equivalent of a rodeo, Mongolian horsemen relax between events while an archer practices her event. Mongolian horsemen on the Gobi display remarkable skill, even as children, and we found both women and men to be proud, strong, creative and determined. The Gobi has abundant sand dunes, but most if it is plains suitable for herding goats, camels and horses. There are villages, but everywhere are Gers, the homes of nomadic people who take their herds where there is adequate grazing. Water is precious, but available because of frequent rains.
