This prodigious tree is a hybrid, a cross between an apple and crabapple tree. The fruit is round, tasty, red, and makes outstanding jelly. In Calgary it can snow in any month of the year, and a snowfall caught the tree in full bloom. The blossoms come early, well before the leaves are fully developed, and the fruit is ready for picking in a good year by the end of August. The tree was developed at the Agricultural Experimental Farm in Saskatchewan to survive harsh winters, and it is the hardiest fruit tree to grow in the Chinook Arch.
